ABB flowmeter receives first Ethernet-APL certification from FieldComm Group

After a series of comprehensive tests, the international standardization organization FieldComm Group awarded ABB's vortex flowmeter (VortexMaster FSV400) and swirl flowmeter (SwirlMaster FSS400) the world's first Ethernet-APL standard certification. Vortex and swirl flowmeters are the most widely used flowmeters in the process industry. Through Ethernet-APL technology empowerment, ABB brings vortex and swirl flowmeters with Ethernet communication into hazardous areas in industrial environments.
As a new member of the Ethernet family, Ethernet-APL is a technology designed for securely connecting field instruments in the process industry, and for remote high-speed transmission and a communication standard that runs through multiple levels of the automation structure. Its design is based on the 10BASE-T1L Ethernet standard, allowing the cable to be up to 1000 meters long, with a transmission rate of 10 Mbit/s, which is intrinsically safe, allowing Ethernet and TCP/IP communications to be fully applied in hazardous environments, such as chemical plants, oil and gas operations, and hydrogen plants. In previous industrial environments, Ethernet communications were difficult to lay Ethernet communication networks in large industrial facilities due to concerns about safety, cost, and cable length limitations.
Tilo Merlin, platform manager of the instrumentation business line of ABB's measurement and analysis business unit and head of the APL development project, said: "For ABB, this certification is an important milestone in our move towards digital instruments and networked systems. Obtaining this certification means that we can quickly embed Ethernet-APL technology into other instruments based on the same platform. We plan to launch pressure and temperature instruments using Ethernet-APL technology in 2025."

At the 2023 CIIE, ABB released vortex and swirl flowmeters equipped with Ethernet-APL, bringing the technical advantages and characteristics of Ethernet-APL into on-site flow measurement, simplifying on-site communication connections, enhancing the transmission rate of on-site data, and providing a feasible solution for analyzing and diagnosing a large number of process parameters and real-time monitoring of complex on-site conditions.
